TWO birds in the hand is worth...

Street photography : three summer Dam stories

For Sunday Street day, I’m digging up some summer Dam stories today, made earlier this year, on the Dam square in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (July 2014)

The wool of a black sheep is just as warm

Another street shot today, but not a Dam-story this time. This photo was made on the Nieuwmarkt square Farmer’s market. Another great place in Amsterdam to hang around in the hopes of catching some nice street shots… 🙂

Title inspired by a quote of Ernest Lehman:
“After all, the wool of a black sheep is just as warm”

It’s 1.30 am here, so it’s in fact Monday already, but in many parts of the world it’s still Sunday, so it’s all right to still post my #SundayStreetday photo, right?

I think I may start a new theme under my “Streets of Amsterdam” series: the Dam-stories… : Street shots made on the Dam in Amsterdam. – Here is the first one 😀

Last summer street shots of the June series

Deze blog post in het Nederlands (link).

Well, summer is really over in Amsterdam. Actually, fall has taken over, and it’s beautiful outside. It’s time to get out there for both great autumn street and nature shots. But I’m still a little house-bound because of loads of organisational work to do, so I have to bind myself to my chair for a few days more.

No problem as for the photo blogging though, since I have a lot of great material left to process from the past months of photo shoots on the streets. So now let’s reminisce on a great summer with these last three street photo’s from the June series 😉 .

Today it’s time for the third photo from the mini-series I made on the Vocational Trainingmarket in Leiden (*). This time the hands of the young girl who was kneading the bread in the photo here . I turned these photo’s into black and white and added a grain filter. I want to put them together into a collage-poster – by following my blogs you’ll be able to see the step by step process.

Here is the second photo from the mini-series I made on the Vocational Trainingmarket in Leiden (*). It’s the hands of two young students manicure showing treating the hands of two interested girls. I turned these photo’s into black and white and added a grain filter. I want to put them together into a collage-poster – by following my blogs you’ll be able to see the step by step process.

As I was walking around on the Vocational Training market in Leiden (*) this week, trying to make a photostory of the event,  I thought of the idea of making a mini series, focussing on the hands of these young people, showing their skills. This morning, I picked out three of my best ‘working hands’ shots, converted them into black and white, and added a grain filter. I really love them and think I will further work them into a collage or triptych poster. Here’s the first one 🙂

Hands of a boy demonstrating his skills as a precision instrument maker. He’s holding a thin glass pipe into the flame of a burner to melt , bend and shape it

Fun in this photo is to see how the little scater on the T-shirt of the boy seems to be scating along on the heath of the flame…

Missed shot … or not?

Missed shot… or not?

‘Streets of Amsterdam’-series

Oops!! I don’t remember what I was doing… Maybe I was distracted just for a moment. Probably I was just looking in another direction, trying to spot an upcoming event to catch in a street shot… So I didn’t see this coming at all, and only realised that it could make an interesting shot as they were already passing straight in front of me: a whole group of tourists, in a hurry to catch their train, dragging their suitcases on wheels behind them. I still turned and zoomed in, trying to catch them from the back, but… too late! Only the disappearing suitcases on the upper edge of the frame, leaving my disappointed shadow behind them. Still a fun street shot, don’t you think LOL? At least I think it’s comic! Maybe someone can come up with a striking caption? Feel free to give it a try!

Would the older man not hear what the young people behind him are talking? Is he daydreaming or is he secretly eavesdropping? What do you think?
